Wrapped in FocusHoliday Devotional – Day 17

“And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped
Him in swaddling cloths and laid Him in a manger,
because there was no room for them in the inn.”

Luke 2:7 (NKJV)

When Jesus Son of man (John 3:13) was baby Jesus in the manger, He was truly one of us, needing a loving mother’s tender care–and Mary met His needs, wrapped Him in cloths warm and soft, holding Him close, cradling the head He couldn’t yet hold up, measuring her breath to His. In the very beginning, life for our Savior was simple.

And Jesus Son of God (John 11:27) has been meeting our needs ever since, at the beginning, middle, or end of anything. He wraps us in His love, cradles our fearful and hurting hearts, and measures out the grace we need to carry on. It’s a gift of focus on us as if we’re all He has to tend to, the only needy baby in the house.

We can trust Him to respond to our every cry the way Mary responded to Jesus’ baby whispers, His childhood hurts–the human side of His world. He knows well how important to us fragile and insecure sheep a close and powerful Shepherd is. He knows and He responds, with guidance and peace, the Son of God close as man needs, Christmas alive every moment.

Prayer

Father, thank You for Jesus’ human birth and life and His wonderful ability to know just what we need.

Action

Gather some strips of cloth, towels, or old clothing. Hold your children close and gently wrap the cloths around them and say with each wrap something like, “Jesus brings His love, Jesus brings His peace, Jesus is listening to you.” And tell them that His focus on them is just as secure as your arms around them right now.
